iPhone 15 can act as a wireless charger for your Apple Watch
One feature that some Android phones have had for years but iPhones still lack is reverse wireless charging. This allows you to use your phone as a wireless charger for other devices, and that’s what future iPhones – maybe even iPhone 15 – may allow you to do.
That’s according to sources talking to 9to5Mac (opens in a new tab), who suggested that Apple is working on the feature. In fact, apparently it was planned for iPhone 14 Pro And iPhone 14 Pro Maxbut the technical delay meant it missed the inclusion deadline.
The sources did not specifically say that it will come to the iPhone 15 series, but if it is ever intended for the iPhone 14 series then it could certainly happen. However, for now, they only say that it is planned for an iPhone in the future.
Whenever it lands, it looks like it could be exclusive to the Pro models only – or perhaps iPhone 15 Ultra if such a phone existed.
Aspects of current developments obviously include a distinctive user interface with sound effects and on-screen animations, so you know when reverse wireless charging kicks in. Apple is said to be working on new firmware as well, to manage charging speed, heat dissipation, and charging performance.
Concerns about charging speed and heat dissipation are apparently a big part of the reason for the delay, and sources note that while reverse wireless charging is still ongoing, there is a possibility it may be further delayed or even eliminated. So there’s no guarantee that a future iPhone will be able to charge you wirelessly. Apple Watch or AirPods.
Analysis: not the first sign of reverse wireless charging
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of an iPhone with wireless reverse charging. In fact, the company filed Some related patent applicationswith a date from 2015.
also had some leaks surrounding the feature, including the claim that it is set to launch again on iPhone 11.
That didn’t happen, of course, but there are signs of progress. For one thing, the MagSafe Battery Pack can be charged wirelessly with an iPhone — though only when the iPhone itself is plugged in.
The 9to5Mac report also notes that FCC (Federal Communications Commission) filings from 2020 show that iPhone 12″ there is some hardware required for wireless charging, although the feature was never enabled.
It’s strange that Apple is struggling so much with a feature that many people best android phone have been for years, but hopefully the issues will be resolved soon.
