Interior of Fisker Project PEAR revealed, will have “Houdini” trunk

Fisker has revealed more details about its much-anticipated Project PEAR, a vehicle that has the potential to bring electric vehicles to a wider audience thanks to a promised starting price of $29,900.

Fisker announced on Wednesday that the PEAR will hit the road as a prototype later this year and make its official debut in the second half of 2023. The company previously announced that production would begin sometime around 2024.

Production will be outsourced to Foxconn, a Taiwanese contract manufacturer best known for making iPhones for Apple. Foxconn will handle PEAR production at a former General Motors plant in Lordstown, Ohio. that it has from struggling electric vehicle startup Lordstown Motors.

PEAR is just a codename. It’s an acronym for “Personal Electric Automotive Revolution,” and Fisker describes the car as a sporty, agile crossover for urban environments. It will be about 177 inches long, or slightly shorter than small electric cars like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Volkswagen ID.4, and can seat five.

Fisker on Wednesday also provided a look at the PEAR’s interior design and said the car will have something called a Houdini trunk, as well as low straps and a large wraparound windshield. The Houdini trunk is described as an alternative to the traditional rear cargo hatch.

Buyers will be able to choose between a single-engine rear-wheel drive configuration or a dual-engine all-wheel drive configuration. They will also be able to choose between two batteries, with the large option (Hyper Range) targeted to offer a range of over 310 miles. An available panoramic roof with solar panels will help extend the operating range.

Fisker says it will release more details about the PEAR throughout 2022. The company also says the car has already reached 3,200 pre-orders.

Meanwhile, Fisker’s first car, the Ocean, has surpassed 50,000 pre-orders. The compact crossover starts at $37,499 and will begin production in November. Here, Fisker has outsourced production, in this case Magna Steyr is handling the production at a factory in Austria. .
