Instead, Steam is swapping Lunar New Year sales for new spring sales

Steam will drop its annual Lunar New Year sale next year, replacing it with a new spring sale. That means the digital storefront will now have sales for all four seasons, and Valve has also outlined dates for the next three major sales events.

Valve Outline the news in a Steamworks blog post. “The addition of Spring Sale was a popular request from our developer and publisher communities,” reads the post. “It will allow us to create more space between our four major seasonal sales and provide more opportunities throughout the year for developers to expand and fulfill their discount schedule.”

The first spring sale will run next year from March 16 to March 23. That’s three full sales, though. The first is the fall sale from November 22 to 29, then the winter sale from December 22 to January 5.

The Spring Sale is likely to function like all other seasonal sales, by taking over the Steam homepage and directing visitors to the hundreds of games on sale on the platform.

Steam’s Lunar New Year sale was introduced in 2016 when the storefront experienced a large influx of developers and players from Asia. However, Chinese New Year happens in January, which means there isn’t much time between it and Steam’s winter sale last month. Valve’s post said: “We think many publishers will still choose to discount games during the Lunar New Year, using custom discounters. “But we suspect that customers will be better served after a little while in the midst of the massive seasonal sale across Steam.”
