Instagram provides automatic captions for videos in your feed

Fierce Instagram compete with TikTok is bearing more fruit. The social network is comparing itself to its competition by introducing automatic subtitles (which TikTok has had since last April) to the video in your feed. They will also be enabled by default for creators. Auto-generated captions will initially be available in “selected” languages, but Instagram hopes to expand them to more languages and countries.

The AI behind the captions won’t be perfect. However, Instagram hopes the quality will “continue to improve” as the AI learns.

This addition will improve accessibility for deaf and hard of hearing users, who will have more options for spoken word video. Producers won’t have to manually add subtitles. However, Instagram also notes that this will help people who prefer to watch videos only with the sound off. You won’t have to switch the volume (and startle others in the process) just to understand what someone is saying.

In that regard, automatic captions can change your Instagram habits. You’re more likely to watch the video immediately instead of scrolling through or saving it to watch later. That’s good news for Instagram’s view stats, of course, but it can also help aspiring social media stars build their audiences.
