Disney and Pixar’s Inside Out 2 is the newest member of the billion-dollar club.
As of Sunday, the animated film had grossed $1.014 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film of 2024 and the first since Warner Bros. Barbie up to 1 billion USD at the global box office.

The billion-dollar milestone is a much-needed win for Disney’s animation hub Pixar. Once a successful studio, Pixar has suffered box office losses in the wake of the pandemic. Much of the studio’s struggles stem from Disney’s decision to release several animated films directly on its Disney+ streaming service while theaters were closed and even after they reopened.
As a result, before “Inside Out 2”, no animated film from Pixar or Walt Disney Animation studio had grossed more than $480 million at the global box office since 2019.
“Inside Out 2” also showed how important family audiences are to box office revenue. Crowds are not catered for accounted for more than 70% of the audience attending domestic film premieres, according to data from EntTelligence.
While this audience flocked to theaters to see Universal’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which has grossed more than $1.36 billion at the global box office, they didn’t get much to enjoy. until recently released movies. by Sony “Garfield Movie” and by Paramount “IF.”
“Inside Out 2” also attracted the coveted teen demographic to theaters, with 14 percent of theatergoers being 13- to 17-year-olds. That younger generation has largely been absent from the market in recent years.
As the future of the film industry, this group is especially important to the industry. Bringing them back to the big screen has become a top priority for studios and theater operators.
The next family and teen movie is Universal and Illumination’s Despicable Me 4, which hits theaters over the July 4 holiday weekend.
