Influenza vaccine is NOT EFFECTIVE during the 2021-2022 flu season

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report found that the flu vaccine used during the 2021-2022 virus season was a poor match and did not prevent circulation.

The researchers found that the vaccine only reduced mild flu cases by 16%, which they did not consider statistically significant.

The strain of flu that hit the US this year was the H3N2 strain, one of the more deadly versions of the virus, and the injection didn’t match the specific version of the virus that eventually emerged.

Experts have been warning of a devastating flu season this year for months before it hit, after the virus crashed last season leaving many people without antibodies to fight it.

Many Americans have gotten the flu shot, which health officials recommend to prevent the virus, but they’ve actually done little to protect them from infection.

The CDC found that repeating the flu vaccine between 2021 and 22 helped protect people from contracting the virus, although flu season still hasn't been as devastating as expected. Pictured: A woman in Lakewood, California, gets a flu shot on October 14

This interim estimate of VE influenza 2021–22 suggests that influenza vaccination does not significantly reduce the risk of outpatient illness from influenza A virus, CDC researchers write in the study. has dominated this season”.

Data for the study, released Thursday afternoon, was collected from 3,600 patients across seven states.

In total, 41% of those who tested positive for influenza were vaccinated and 50% of those who tested negative were not vaccinated.

After adjusting, the researchers calculated a 16% risk of infection for those vaccinated.

Vaccines are believed to be 40 to 60 percent effective at preventing infection from the virus.

Experts at the University of Pennsylvania raised concerns about the injections late last year.

A pre-print study found that vaccine-administered antibodies had no effect against the H3N2 strain circulating at the time.

The CDC also noted in the study that vaccine coverage this flu season is worse than in previous years.

‘Influenza vaccine coverage has been lower so far this season in certain groups, including certain groups at higher risk of severe flu or flu complications, such as those who are pregnant. , infants and preschool-age children, as well as people from racial and ethnic groups,’ the researchers wrote.

The version of the virus is also one of the more worrisome, with a rapid mutation rate and high potential for hospitalization and death in vulnerable populations.

Although the vaccine doesn’t do much to prevent infection, experts are confident it is effective at preventing the worst symptoms of the virus.

This is similar to the COVID-19 vaccine, which remains effective at preventing hospitalization and death even as immunity against the infection begins to wane.

Experts predict that this flu season will be devastating, as the virus will flare up again after being wiped out by Covid last year.

It has been described as ‘mild’, although vaccination rates are lower and many people leave behind things like face masks and social distancing as Covid fears are also starting to wane.

Experts aren’t sure why the flu season they were hoping for didn’t materialize, but it’s clear that vaccines haven’t played as much of the role expected.
