Individuals under the age of 21 cannot buy canned ice cream in New York

Rub! If you live in New York, get ready for a change you might never expect. Based on CBS New York, a recently passed state law, it is illegal for anyone under the age of 21 to buy a box of whipped cream. Law S.2819-A is intended to prevent teenagers from using canned whipped cream to inhale nitrous oxide, also known as “whippets”.
The bill, which is sponsored by New York State Senator Joseph Addabbo, goes into effect in November 2021. However, it is only about to be implemented now. Senator Addabbo said the issue first came to the state’s attention after a surge in complaints regarding empty cans strewn on the streets.
Whippets are very dangerous. The Arch academy website explains the dangerous side effects that individuals may experience, including impaired judgment and muscle control. It caused some users to go off the balcony or trip in traffic. Others have had heart failure, choking, or seizures. Overdose can cause hallucinations or put the user in a coma. Sometimes, a metal wire container explodes with catastrophic consequences.
Senator Addabbo spoke out about the new law stating: “Nitrous oxide is a chemical that is legal for legal professional use, but when used improperly, it can be extremely deadly.” . He added, “Sadly young people buy and inhale this gas to get ‘high’ because they mistake it for a ‘safe’ substance. This law will eliminate easy access to this dangerous substance for our youth.”
Anyone in New York caught selling a box of whipped cream to someone under the age of 21 will face fines of $250 for the first offense and up to $500 for subsequent violations. Some roommates were shocked by the new law. One person commented, “Wahhhhh. It’s crazy.” Another wrote, “I’m pretty sure they have bigger problems but okay let’s make the whipped cream legislation.”
Roommates, comment and let us know what you think about the ban!
