The hat worn by actor Harrison Ford in the second instalment of the Indiana Jones series has sold for nearly half a million pounds at auction.
The brown felt hat – made specifically for the film Temple of Doom – sold for $630,000 (£487,000) in Los Angeles on Thursday.
Other movie memorabilia was also sold at the same time, including props from Star Wars, Harry Potter and James Bond.
Jones, an adventurous archaeologist, appears wearing a hat at the beginning of the film as he and his companions jump out of a crashing plane on an inflatable raft.
In the scene, he is on a plane with nightclub singer Wilhelmina “Willie” Scott, played by Kate Capshaw, and her 12-year-old friend Short Round, played by Ke Huy Quan, while escaping the clutches of a Chinese criminal gang.
After the flight is sabotaged by the pilot, the trio use rafts to fall from the plane before sliding down the mountainside.
The auction house said the helmet was also used during additional photography at producer George Lucas’ visual effects facility.
This fedora was also worn by Ford’s stunt double in the 1984 film Dean Ferrandini, and is sold with never-before-seen photos of the stunt double wearing the iconic outfit on set.
Ferrandini died last year. This hat is in his personal collection.
Auction house Propstore says the dark brown fedora is an updated version of the original hat featured in the first Indiana Jones film – Raiders Of The Lost Ark – with a “more tapered” crown than the first.
Designed by the Herbert Johnson Hat Company in London, the inner lining features the initials “IJ” embroidered in gold.
Other items auctioned included an imperial scout helmet used in the 1983 Star Wars film Return Of The Jedi – which went for $315,000 (£243,000) – as well as a lightsaber wand used by Daniel Radcliffe in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, which fetched a winning bid of $53,550 (£41,400).
Meanwhile, the suit worn by Daniel Craig in the 2012 James Bond film Skyfall sold for $35,000 (£27,000).
Propstore CEO Brandon Alinger said the auction house “takes pride in connecting more fans with the historical pieces they cherish.”
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the Indiana Jones hat sold for more than double the price of another Temple of Doom fedora that went for $300,000 (£232,000) at auction in 2021.
