An Indian student in Australia is hospitalized after being stabbed 11 times last week in a brutal knife attack his family says is a hate crime.

Shubham Garg, 28, studying for a PhD at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, was attacked on October 6.

His parents, who live in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, were trying to get a visa to travel to Australia. Speaking to NDTV today, they broke the camera when they begged for help.

Shubham arrived in Australia on 1 September after graduating from IIT-Madras.

According to Australian media reports, Shubham was approached by a man on a street around 10:30pm on October 6. The man is said to have demanded cash and threatened him. When he refused, the attacker stabbed him repeatedly before running away.

Shubham suffered multiple wounds to his face, chest and abdomen. In that condition, he managed to go to a nearby house, and was taken to the hospital.

“Shubham somehow survived the attack. We found out on October 8 when he didn’t answer my calls and his friend called back,” said his father, Ramniwas Garg, choked said.

“He had an 11-hour operation in his abdomen. I asked the government for help to treat my son and issue a visa for my son,” he said.

A 27-year-old man was arrested and charged with attempted murder. According to reports, the attacker is not known to Shubham. Sources also told NDTV that there was no evidence that it was a racist attack.

Shubham needs some surgery, his sister, Kavya Garg, said in tweets calling on the government to help the family get emergency visas.

“My brother Shubham Garg, 28, from UP, was brutally attacked 11 times in Sydney, Australia with a knife and he is in critical condition. We seek your immediate help. in this matter and get an urgent visa for his family members to take care of him,” Kavya Garg posted on Wednesday, tagging the offices of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Foreign Minister S Jaishankar and Minister. UP Yogi Adityanath.

Yesterday, she tweeted: “Update! My brother is undergoing multiple surgeries and the doctor says the infection is spreading in his body. Asking @narendramodi for urgent help on this matter.”

After the family appealed, the authorities stepped in.

“The Indian Consulate in Sydney has provided consular assistance to this individual. The Australian High Commission is assisting in facilitating the issuance of a visa for a family member,” a spokesperson for the Australian High Commission told NDTV. .
