VISAKHAPATNAM: Traditional bull-drawn cart racing events have become popular tourist attractions in the rural areas of Andhra Pradesh during the Sankranti festival.
Like Moi Chara (bull racing), a centuries-old tradition in the villages of South 24 Parganas in West Bengal during the monsoon season, Yedla Bandi Pandalu (bull racing) in the rural areas of Andhra Pradesh in Sankranti festivals and local deities (January to March) are still popular.

A few days before the Sankranti festival, bullock races start in some areas of Anakapalle and Vizianagaram districts. The organizers of the events said that the Bull Races will start in the areas of East Godavari, West Godavari, Nellore, Krishna, Guntur and several other districts on the first day of (Bhogi) Sankranti festival and continue continued until February.
The recent bull-drawn cart race at Chukkapalli village of Cheedikada Mandal in Anakapalle district attracted crowds from all the surrounding areas as well as some youths from Vizag city.
Two bulls were attached to a wooden cart for the first time, which is how the race got its name. Each car is driven by two coaches and each car has to travel a specified distance of 2 to 3km in a certain time. The event organizers will decide the winner to run the distance in minutes or less time than other cars.
For us, bull racing is a matter of honor. Gandi Venkata Rao from Vepada in Vizianagaram district and Majji Devanand from Chukkapalli village in Anakapalle district said that although the prize money for the race is low (Rs 20,000 and sometimes Rs 1 lakh), we always try to win. in the race. Both Venkata Rao and Devanand have won many races in parts of the state and they are most interested in their bulls (each pair costs more than Rs 14 lakh)
The organizers said that the bullock races will be held in a picturesque village setting. To avoid overcrowding and harming participating gaurs, special measures have been taken. As a rule, trailer drivers were asked not to hit animals and not to resort to any other harsh measures. Koilada Mohan Rao from KJ Puram village of V Madugula Mandal in Anakapalle district said that breaking the rules will result in a point penalty and disqualification from the race.
