In Kabul, a new ritual: Hungry women wait for bread outside bakeries

Women in burkas sit outside a bakery in Kabul.  Poor women from the hilltop slums around Kabul flocked to the city's bakeries, waiting in silence to see if someone would buy them bread.

Since the Taliban came to power, food insecurity has been on the rise. Women in blue shirts sit in front of the city’s high-end baker’s shop, quietly waiting for charity passersby to buy them bread.
