I’m playing Grand Theft Auto V for the first time and it’s ramping up to hype

You know every time a new story about Grand Theft Auto V’s huge sales numbers somehow bounces back – it recently surpassed 160 million copies sold – someone joked, “Who the hell hasn’t played this game?” Yes, it’s me. I’m someone who hasn’t played any games, or at least, I did until Monday. Now, about 10 hours after Grand Theft Auto V on PlayStation 5, I feel like an idiot.

Grand Theft Auto V is completely worthy of the hype, although I believe there is no way that an open world game with so many systems and mechanics, now almost a decade old, would ever be able to promote. good this in 2022. I’ve always known GTA was a bunch of crude jokes, smut jokes and more. And obviously, Grand Theft Auto V is a lot of that, but somehow it all works. I burst out laughing as I type this because I imagine 99% of people reading this are like, “Yeah dude, duh,” but if you’re someone who hasn’t played this game yet, let me tell you: play it. .

When I started the story mode for the first time and saw the image, I chuckled. Rockstar Games will not charge for this new generation version of the game. It should have been an update because, at best, it was simply a 4K/60 FPS patch that made things look a little better. Despite the improved textures and lighting, Grand Theft Auto V still looks a lot like a game from 2013. However, after shaking off the feeling that this enhanced version was supposed to be free, I got it. being able to play a game that I can feel is a new favorite.

One thing I found particularly striking in Grand Theft Auto V was the sense of realism these characters felt at once. Michael, Trevor, and Brad all reacted and told each other how I imagine they would be if they were real people in the world of bank robberies in a remote snowy town. Quickly meeting Franklin and his friends, and I found myself constantly laughing out loud during their conversation. They are fun and engaging. I turned down the volume of in-game music with a single touch to make sure I heard every interaction while driving through Los Santos, and I loved hearing phone calls come through the speakers on my DualSense controller.

However, above all, the conversations between the characters in this game are very real. Franklin and his friends relentlessly (and lovingly) give each other crap the same way my friends and I do. Michael’s nihilism fits perfectly into the setting of Rockstar’s Los Santos, and while I’ve only just met Trevor, I’ve come to appreciate Steven Ogg’s unremarkable personality. Trevor was a madman, and Ogg played well.

For me, the dialogue is the driving force of this game. It varies from factual and well-written to completely unique, but not in a bad way – the more enjoyable dialogue feels at home in this captivating, focused version of Hollywood. In a minute, I’m having a real conversation as Franklin talking to Jimmy about his dad’s faults. Another minute, I’m playing Michael listening to a salesman introduce me to a new weed that sends Michael flying so high that he plunges into a machine gun frenzy to kill dozens of aliens. Every corner I turn, I find something else in Los Santos that captures my attention, be it the new Stranger and Monsters mission, a billboard that gives me goosebumps, or a street that reminds me of a street. about my trip to Los Angeles in 2019.

I’ve played GTA games before, and I love both Red Dead Redemption and Red Dead Redemption II, but I realized that a 2013 Rockstar game wouldn’t offer a well-designed open world like the latter. hey, however, I still join the love affair with Los Santos. It’s impressive how Rockstar was able to cram into this city and the surrounding desert a decade ago, and my brain aches just thinking about how big Grand Theft Auto VI will be.

Grand Theft Auto V also has some impressive smart text. For example, as Michael, I caught my wife sleeping with her tennis coach. Enraged, Michael decided to take revenge on the coach. He informs Franklin of the situation, and the two head to a cliffside house in Malibu in a pickup. Both tied the truck’s tow line to the beam that held the driver’s house on the cliff. As they drove away, the beams and much of the house fell down the hill.

I loved the scene, but I thought to myself the whole time, “This is funny but there is no way a tennis coach would own a house like this.” And sure enough 30 seconds later, Michael gets a phone call from the coach saying it’s not his home. In fact, it was the home of another tennis player that the coach was sleeping with. I am very pleased with this change as Rockstar responded quickly and humorously to a question I was wondering. That intelligent writing has been present during my 10 hours in Grand Theft Auto V so far, and I can’t wait to find out what else awaits me in Los Santos.

Will the gameplay, especially the gunfight, be the same as it was in 2013? OH that’s right. Are the performance and visual improvements worth the price Rockstar is charging? Is not. Does Grand Theft Auto V hold the pole well? Yes, a lot like that.

Maybe it’s silly for me to be surprised – Grand Theft Auto V is the best-selling game of all time and one of the most successful entertainment features ever – but the game is really good. . I just wish I had played it years ago.
