‘I’m feeling good’: Biden escapes covid isolation to go to Rehoboth to be reunited with Jill


President Joe Biden left the White House for Rehoboth Beach on Sunday morning after being released from isolation.

The president is heading to his family home on the Delaware coast, where he will be reunited with Jill Biden. He last saw the first lady on July 20.

“I feel good,” he told reporters at the White House upon departure.

He smiled and waved as he walked towards Marine One.

Biden, 79, finally tested negative for COVID on Saturday, seven days after developing a recurring infection with the virus.

The White House has not said whether President Biden will test negative a second time, as officials have said he will do before coming out of isolation.

White House physician Dr Kevin C. O’ Connor wrote on Saturday: ‘The President continues to feel very well. Given his active recovery that we reported last Saturday, we’ve continued to follow up on a daily basis.

‘This morning, his SARS-CoV-2 antigen test came back negative.

‘Out of an abundance of caution, the President will continue his strict isolation measures pending a second negative test as previously described.’

Biden first tested positive for COVID on July 21. He took the antiviral drug Paxlovid to treat the condition and tested negative on July 27.

The President later returned to work in the West Wing and wore a mask.

But he was reinstated on July 30, with another positive test result.

The president spent a total of 14 days in quarantine in the White House – including 7 days during his most recent re-infection, before testing negative on Saturday.

Paxlovid – manufactured by Pfizer – is said to be able to cause a COVID re-infection rate of up to 40% in patients taking it.

Scientists say this may be because it prevents the body from forming its own natural response to a COVID infection, leaving patients vulnerable to reinfection more quickly after initially recovering from the illness.
