Via Adam Baskin: WBC lightweight champion Devin ‘The Dream’ Haney vowed to bring all the titles home to the United States after he tore the four belts of unified champion George Kambosos Jr this Sunday, June 5, in their undisputed championship match.
The 23-year-old Haney (27-0, 15 KOs) considers herself a class above the 28-year-old Australian Kambosos Jr (20-0, 10 KOs).
Although Kambosos has the majority of belts of 135, Haney feels he stands on his shoulders in the talent division, and he plans to make that clear to the world.
Kambosos and Haney will meet for the main event at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne, Australia. The fight will be shown on ESPN+ and ESPN at 9:00 p.m. ET this Saturday, June 4.
With Australia leading the US, the Kambosos vs. Haney will take place in that country on June 5.
“What good is it if you don’t carry a belt? Aren’t we fighting for the belts? Why don’t you bring a belt? Clown,” Devin Haney said Sunday, expressing disappointment that the Kambosos couldn’t bring home his titles.
“There’s nothing he can do in the ring better than me, and I’m going to show it off in teamfights,” Haney said. “I just think I’m on a completely different level.”
“I definitely think it’s a super battle, but I can’t look past George [Kambosos]. That’s my main focus right now on George,” Haney told Gareth A Davieswhen asked if the showdown with ‘regular’ WBA lightweight champion Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis was a major clash in the near future.
“Like I said, it’s the biggest war [Kambosos vs. Haney], so how can I see through it when it gives everything? My main focus was to continue to focus on George, and after the fight when I won, we could pick him and pick the next one.
“Of course, I don’t dodge and avoid anyone. I want to make the biggest battle happen. I’ve said it time and time again and I’m proving it as we speak. Yeah, of course,” Haney said when asked if a fight between him and Ryan Garcia could happen after he overcame the Kambosos.
“I haven’t seen that too much. I’ve really just been training and in isolation, so I can’t say I’ve been out that much. I work out, come back, relax and rest at the same time.
“I haven’t seen that yet,” Devin said when asked if he now notices that he is in Australia.
“Our warriors have power, and if we really want the fight to happen, we will do what it takes to make it happen. I really showed that I wanted this fight, I begged for this fight [against Kambosos]and I did whatever it took to make it happen,” Haney said when asked if the champions could do more to make the undisputed matches play out.
“I came for all of them and brought them back,” Haney said of the lightweight titles.
