I think the title I wrote is correct. But I think it would also be true if it read, “If you enjoyed but were also extremely disappointed with The Ascent, the similarly classy cyberpunk shooter SlavicPunk: Oldtimer could be your lifesaver.” However, it is a bit long when setting the title. I like this look. I love shooting, it looks deadly and gratifying; I like the ability to sneak into enemies; and i like to hack in the middle of battle to break the enemy.
I’m less sold on the scene, which seems to include all the cyperpunk aesthetic elements I’ve grown tired of, like massive holographic nude women and weary murderous protagonists. You play as a private investigator with a “troubled past”, trying to solve a case involving some stolen data while “battling his own inner demon”. Eesh. Read more in depth steam page doesn’t offer some hope, presenting the game as “unique, inherently Slavic” in a way that can give it its own flavor.
I’ve been playing The Ascent in co-op for the past few months. by Ed review got it right: it started out slow, it was filled with jargon that wasn’t worth studying, and there was absolutely too much running and running backwards. Plus, it breaks all the time. Despite all that, I had fun with it for fleeting moments. With not being an extended loot shooter, SlavicPunk looks like it will deliver those moments more quickly.
We’ll obviously find out when it releases in the spring of 2023.
