‘If they give me less I’ll be homeless’: Fears that Universal Credit cuts could push some over the edge | UK News

Claims that could face a reduction in the actual terms of the financial assistance they receive have told Sky News it could make them homeless.

It is reported that ministers are planning to save £5 billion by increasing the General Credit in line with income rather than inflation, which would leave claimants receiving less.

“If they gave me less, I would be homeless because it would be the choice of raising the kids or paying the rent,” said mother of seven Zoe Bridges.

The 29-year-old from Derby is struggling to make ends meet and is visiting the city’s Hope Center food bank for the first time.

“It’s been a bit of a nightmare, I’ve come to buy necessities like bread and snacks for the kids… the government keeps cutting things. It’s how it is,” she said.

Zoe’s mother-in-law Patricia Price, 59, also received General Credit after she had to leave her job in care because of a back injury.

“I can’t believe they’re considering cutting it again because I don’t know how people are going to live,” she said.

Like many food banks, Hope Center is experiencing a drop in donations due to the cost of living crisis, and Denise Hawley, who runs the bank, is more worried about the impact of limiting benefits. again.

“We’ve been really busy,” she said.

“We can feed more than 100 people a week, and we’re only open four and a half hours a week, it’s unbelievable. And we’re short on everything, canned food, packages, whatever we can. I can provide.

“It’s clear that the crisis is affecting everyone, including the givers, and we’re really aware of that so we’re grateful for everything.”

Ben Crowe, 30, started getting Universal Credit after he was laid off from his warehouse job. He’s been using the food bank for the past few months.

“Basic necessities like milk, that’s 99p, now you’re lucky to get a 4-pinter for £1.50. The prices of essentials are going up.

“If they cut more, I don’t know what I’ll do, some people will have to go back to stealing,” he said.

“I’m so grateful for places like this food bank. Without them, I’d be hungry and I’m scared to think what I’d have to do to make it through.”
