IBM for employees: Moonlighting is not welcome

US-based IT giant IBM made its place clear in the light of the moon. The IT expert said that this way of working is not ethical and the company does not encourage such behavior in the workplace. Sandip Patel, managing director of IBM India, said the company’s position is similar to that of the entire industry in the country. He told reporters at an event in Mumbai: “All of our workers when they get hired, they sign an agreement that says they will work full-time for IBM. . That’s where we are now, and you’ve heard the position in the industry.”
Recently, Infosys sent a reminder letter to its employees that cheating or double-employment was a violation of the employee code of conduct. India’s second-largest IT company said breach of dual employment restrictions could result in disciplinary action and termination of employment.
What is Moonlighting?
Moonlighting refers to performing a second job outside of normal business hours. An employee can work a normal 9 to 5 hour job as a main source of income but has to work nights at another job to earn extra money. Human resources experts have cited moonlight as one of the factors that makes many people reluctant to return to the office.
What Led to the Moonlighting Debate?
The Moonlighting debate started last month after the food delivery platform Swiggy announced the industry’s first ‘Moonlighting policy’ by allowing employees to work on other projects after hours, under certain conditions. “This could include working outside of office hours or on weekends without affecting their productivity for full-time work or having a conflict of interest with Swiggy’s business in any way. any,” a company statement said. The policy applies to all full-time employees of Bundl Technologies, Swiggy’s parent company, including its subsidiaries, branchassociation and group of companies.
Moonlighting seems to have divided traditional technology companies and new age companies. As a number of new-age startups, including fintech unicorn Cred, have voiced support for the policy. Cred told TOI it encourages side hustle. However, most traditional companies call it fraud.
A few days after Swiggy’s announcement, Wipro Chairperson Rishad Premji call this concept cheating. “There’s a lot of talk about geeks in the tech industry. This is cheating – clear and simple,” he tweeted.
Some in the industry also say it’s important to distinguish between a second job and a side hustle regarding pay.
