Via Jim Calfa: Canelo Alvarez (57-2-2, 39 KOs) unexpectedly said he felt he deserved the decision against WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol (20-0, 11 KOs) last Saturday night at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Canelo seems to be in denial about his loss, and he was a little worried not understanding what had happened to him.
Mexican star Canelo insisted he felt he had done enough to win the match, but unfortunately for him, the referees gave Bivol the win by a unanimous decision of 12 innings.
The score for Canelo was the highest when the referees changed direction in this set: 115-113, 115-113 and 115-113. Boxing fans on social media had a much broader scoring battle in favor of Bivol, scoring 118-110 and 119-109.
Canelo says he wants a rematch with Bivol, so that’s what we’ll see. Bivol looks like he has too much firepower for Canelo tonight in terms of his punch output. That was Canelo’s main problem.
It’s not the size of Bivol that Canelo is undoing. Canelo has better power in his shots, but he doesn’t put out enough punches.
Furthermore, Bivol used great footwork to get in and out after he hit his shots. If Canelo had been faster, he would have followed Bivol closely and hit the ground as he backed out. Unfortunately, Canelo lacks footwork.
“You have to accept that is boxing. He’s a great champion,” Canelo Alvarez said in his post-match comments after losing to Dmitry Bivol.
“Sometimes, you lose. I won’t make any excuses. I lost today, and he won.
“He is a really good fighter. He’s the exit type. I also feel his strength. It was a good game and a nice win for him. I felt his strength, but there were no excuses. I think that’s what happens in sports. You win or lose in the sport, and that’s what happens.
“He is a great fighter. He’s in and out and really manages the distance very well. I feel like I’ve done enough to win the fight, but that’s boxing.
“Yes, of course, I have. It doesn’t end like this,” Canelo said when asked if he plans to use his rematch clause to force a second fight with Bivol.
“A rematch, no problem,” said Bivol. “A rematch, let’s talk about. I’m in this fight because I want a chance and I appreciate the chance. I’m ready for the rematch. I just want to make sure I can now be treated like a champion.
“I proved to my boxing fans that they believed in me, and that was not a misjudgment. They believed in me and I appreciate that,” said Bivol.
