Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia’s threat to use nuclear weapons “could come true,” in an interview with CBS’s “Face the Nation” on Sunday.

It’s been seven months since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine in February, and in a rare televised address Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin indirect threat that he was prepared to use nuclear weapons to escalate the war.

Zelenskyy said Russia is targeting nuclear power plants in Ukraine, so there may be some truth to Putin’s claims.

“He wants to frighten the world. These are the first steps of nuclear blackmail. I don’t think he’s cheating,” Zelenskyy said.

According to Russian state media, the voting on the referendum in the Russian-occupied territories of Ukraine is underway. Western and Ukrainian officials are condemning this as a hoax used by the Kremlin to try to legitimize Russia’s annexation of Ukrainian territory.

Zelenskyy said a lot of people will be forced to take part in these referendums, but there is no support in society. He said a threat could emerge if the Russians completed the referendum and announced the results.

“This would make it impossible to continue any diplomatic negotiations with the President of the Russian Federation, and he knows that very well,” Zelenskyy said. “I think it’s a very dangerous signal from President Putin telling us that Putin is not going to end this war.”

Putin partial announcement of military mobilization in Russia in a speech on Wednesday, claiming that the West “wants to destroy our country” and has been trying to “turn the Ukrainian people into cannon fodder.”

Zelenskyy argues that Russia is using war as an excuse to claim that it is being attacked by the West.

“He knew he was losing the war. On the battlefield, Ukraine took the initiative. He could not explain to his society why and he was looking for answers to these questions. “, said Zelenskyy. “Now, the West attacks Russia. Now, the West attacks our territory.”

As winter approaches, Zelenskyy said he knows the coming months will be difficult and complicated. He said Ukrainian forces were working to protect infrastructure such as electricity and water control systems.

“It’s a challenge, but we’re not afraid of it,” he said.
