Via Allan Fox: Ryan Garcia repeated his mantra on Monday that he will “beat” Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis as they go to war at the end of the year. Fans assumed that Ryan was desperate for a day of redemption against Tank Davis before he was spotted by one of the 135th contenders.
To be sure, if Ryan doesn’t get to fight Tank Davis this year, fans will expect him to start fighting the opposition better than the frail old men he’s fighting.
Ryan recently picked up old boxers and seems to have swapped places with the likes of Jeremiah Nakathilia, Jamaine Ortiz, Michel Rivera and William Zepeda.
What upsets many boxing fans is that Ryan (22-0, 18 KOs) still has one match he needs to win against veteran Javier Fortuna (36-3-1, 25 KOs) on the day. July 16 and he’s not talking about that game- up.
With Ryan ONLY talking about the fight with the Davis Tank, it’s easy to see how his intent was in naming the chase/dropping in order to artificially draw attention to the July 16 game. his with 33-year-old Fortuna, whom fans are NOT interested in seeing.
Anything that cares about seeing Ryan face off against Fortuna went up in smoke last July when Joseph ‘Jojo’ Diaz Jr easily beat the former WBA featherweight champion by unanimous decision 12 rounds in the main event on the DAZN tag.
Since Ryan will be fighting Fortuna now AFTER his defeat to Jojo Diaz makes him look as though he only cares about picking up leftovers. It’s a tough move on Ryan’s part as he won’t be recognized for defeating Fortuna, even if he defeats him, which he probably won’t.
To defeat Fortuna, Ryan had to brace his chin. As we saw in his recent clash with the lightweight edge contender Emmanuel Tagoehe is not willing to take the risk to get a knockout after his bad experience is ignored Luke Campbell in 2021.
