Hyundaifully electric Ioniq 5 – present Express car of the year – was voted World Car of the Year in 2022.
Great cross beat sister brand Kia’s EV6 and Ford’s Mustang Mach-E to the overall crown, while it is also named World Tram of the year beat Mercedes EQS and Audi e-tron GT. To complete the hat-trick, the Ioniq 5 was also named World Automotive Design of the Year.
Commenting on the win, SangYup Lee, Executive Vice President and Director of Hyundai’s Global Design Center, said, “With IONIQ 5, we set our sights on creating a new mobility experience – one that changes change the game. This extraordinary vehicle was created through the passion and efforts of designers and engineers, who pushed the boundaries of what is possible in the EV space.”
The World Car Awards are voted on by a panel of 102 international journalists, including Auto Express editor-in-chief Steve Fowler and columnist Mike Rutherford.
Other winners of the Award, announced at the 2022 New York International Auto Show, include Mercedes EQS Named Luxury Car of the Year in the World, Audi’s e-tron GT receives Performance car trophy and Toyota Yaris Cross won the World New Urban Car of the Year Award.
In other good news for Hyundai, Luc Donckerwolke, Creative Director of Hyundai Motor Group, was named World Car Person of the Year 2022 in February for his significant contributions in overseeing the development of Hyundai Motor Group. development of new models, including the IONIQ 5.
The 2022 Auto Express Award not far away, with the winners to be announced at a live ceremony in London on July 5.
