Hyundai Ioniq 5 only powers a remote reindeer farm
A Hyundai Ioniq 5, equipped with Truck (V2L) technology, powers a remote reindeer farm in Tromsø, Norway for three consecutive days. Vehicles serve as the only source of energy in an area of the world that exists off-grid, representing a transition to a clean and smart mobility solution. In addition, the Ioniq 5 powers the off-grid cabin to serve a cozy dinner, using only the vehicle’s V2L function.
V2L technology provides the ability to power and charge all their electronic devices without generating emissions. That means, even in off-grid parts of the world, V2L can power modern lifestyles and electrification, helping off-grid locations around the world meet their energy requirements with this alternative to non-renewable energy sources.
V2L technology is a two-way energy transfer system in which energy is stored in the battery of an electric vehicle, and then transferred to an electrical device that requires power. To provide this functionality, the EV’s software must support a built-in converter that converts direct current (DC) from the battery to alternating current (AC).
Hyundai Motor Company models based on BEV-specific E-GMP (Global Electric Modular Platform) such as the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6, come with V2L capabilities as standard. The platform-mounted integrated charge controller (ICCU) allows current to flow in two directions, both to and from the vehicle’s battery.
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 comes with a 220-volt V2L outlet located below the rear seats. An additional external charging socket, which requires a specific adapter from Hyundai Mobis, can provide up to 3.6 kW of power. This technology underlines Hyundai’s position as a Sustainable and Smart Mobility Solution Provider.
