Via Dan Fitz-Simons: Not long ago, Hughie Fury was rejected by many fans who saw him as an overwhelming disappointment. Some felt Hughie, a B-rank candidate, was given a big battle just because of his last name. Although Hughie performed well against lower level opponents, he always lost in big matches.
For a while, it seemed like he would only appear in the bottom card of big-name battles in Tyson’s shadow or as a low-level opponent or gatekeeper. However, Hughie (26-3) still has talent and recently his attributes have improved with experience and maturity.
He can fend off ropes, throw top lanes from the outside, and topple opponents. He also has quick footwork, great head movement, and quick, precise coordination. These skills, coupled with a solid jaw, have made him one of the best boxers in the tournament.
Hughie has also improved his working speed by relaxing his hands with impressive results. However, a fighter of his size (6’6″) must have more than 15 KOs on his record. Hughie will have to sit down before his punches and pull the trigger when launching combos.
He also lacks a lethal left hook in his arsenal. Watching a few clips of Smok’n Joe Frazer can help him perfect his left hook. These changes will also require less of Kronk Gym’s hold, run, and lean tactics.
But the most important factor in Hughie’s return is motivation. Fight fans have once again shown interest in his return. To keep this exciting story alive, he needs to fight at least three times this year.
Hughie has regained the respect he deserves by winning the last three matches in a cleverly entertaining way. At 27, fitness isn’t an issue, and he hasn’t peaked yet. He likes to be busy and often says that he likes to fight.
Moreover, it would be foolish to throw away the advantages of his young speed and coordination. Hughie has 29 fights under his belt, and while he was defeated in 3 competitions, Parker, Povetkin and Pulev can hardly be considered C-rank opponents.
He’s never been knocked down, and despite his “strange” style, Hughie has always shown the right form to take on any opponent that comes up against him.
His father, Peter Fury, also trained his cousin Tyson, and Hughie frequently stood by Tyson during the early years of his career, adding credibility to his résumé.
Over time, Hughie has developed into an excellent boxer – boxer. He will never be a Marciano or a Mike Tyson, but any boxer who takes on him will have his hands full.
Although fighting fans love an explosive, a victory is a victory. If Hughie continues to fight and win at a hectic pace, an alphabet title could be out soon.
Fans are tired of the top ten overweight slugs having to sit in their chairs for months on end. Hughie would be wise to avoid this trap. He’s dropped from a record 12 games in 2013 to just one in 2021.
This radical reduction in activity could adversely affect his career. He definitely needs more than just one fight in 2022.
Hughie’s problem now is winning tough opponents because of his winning streak (Sour, Wach and Hammer), as well as concerns about his unorthodox style.
As a result, several interesting prospects, including Ruiz Jr., Chisora and Arreola, did not materialize. Hopefully a war against Helenius will take place.
Not all of Hughie’s matches are against top 10 opponents or championship titles. At a relatively young age, he still has the opportunity to build an impressive career.
The alternative to staying busy is stagnation, rust, and the loss of a growing fan base. Hughie would do well to ignore the usual derision of lawyers, matchmakers and reporters.
Training is not fighting, and this is not the time for Hughie to sit on his laurels. Waiting time no fighter; the clock is ticking.
