Avengers actor Jeremy Renner is hospitalize Sunday after a snow plow accident and currently recovering.

Renner suffered chest and orthopedic injuries in the accident in Reno, Nevada, and is in a critical but stable condition after undergoing surgery, according to his agent.

Performer post on Instagram from his hospital bed on Tuesday, saying, “Thanks for all your kind words. I’m too confused to type now. But I send love to all of you.”

Snow plows are attached to vehicles to shovel snow off the road. This is how to stay safe when using them and other snow removal equipment, according to Commercial Alternative Retailer Warehouse Parts.

Snow rake

  • Make sure you get enough rest before doing the activity.
  • Keep warm.
  • Inspect the vehicle and plow thoroughly.
  • When moving between locations, turn off the plow and tilt it to the right to avoid contact with the snowbanks.
  • Try not to exceed 40 miles per hour with the vehicle.
  • Monitor the temperature gauge to make sure the engine is not overheating.
  • Identify obstacles, such as speed bumps, curbs, fences, and pipes, and chart your path using driveway markers.
  • Take a break if you need to.

Snow shovel

  • Warm up your muscles for about 10 minutes. Snow shoveling can be a workout.
  • Adjust the pace, rehydrate, and stop if you experience signs of discomfort, such as shortness of breath or chest pain.
  • Use a shovel suitable for your height and strength level.
  • Don’t throw the snow to the side or behind you as the twisting motion can put extra strain on the body.

snow blower

  • Keep your hands and feet away from the moving parts of the blower and do not allow exposed skin to touch the motor.
  • Clear areas with loose items, such as doormats, sleds, and boards.
  • Wear earplugs.
  • Don’t leave it alone or point it at people, and pay attention to where it snows.
  • Do not pour fuel in while it is running or hot.
  • Children under 15 years of age must not operate a snow blower or be near a running machine.

General snow removal tips

  • Keep warm.
  • Make sure you can see clearly.
  • It’s better to start early and clean often to avoid having to move compacted snow.
  • Consult your doctor as snow removal can increase heart rate.
