How to lose weight and keep it off

How to lose weight and maintain it

Why is it so hard to lose weight?

I’m sure you’ve been there at some point. Ask yourself, am I losing weight AND not losing weight?

You’ve been suggested a new diet plan or watched the latest ‘guaranteed weight loss program’ on TV and you’ve jumped in first and lost a significant amount of weight.

A weight that you are very satisfied with. You are proud of yourself!

Your friends have noticed that you look slimmer. You had to buy new and nicer clothes. Your confidence is sky-high and your husband can’t take his hands off you!

But now that you’ve completed your juice plan, just shaken your diet, keto plan or detox program and so you start bringing back some of your ‘regular’ foods.

Nothing too crazy though and you’re still eating pretty well but slowly and surely the weight starts to gain back.

You panic and have an emergency day or two where you bounce back with shakes to stop the flow of weight gain – but it doesn’t help.

Before you know it, not only is the weight back, but now you’re even heavier than before!

Tips to lose weight and keep it

It’s frustrating and you’ll be depressed for a while until someone suggests another ‘definite weight loss’ diet and you come back hoping that the weight won’t drop again this time.

Of course, it doesn’t.

So how do we lose a good amount of weight and make sure it lasts forever without having to go on a diet forever?

Check out the 3 tips below that I use to help all of my clients lose weight over time and not only maintain but develop habits and lifestyle changes that will help you stay at your weight forever!

  • TIP #1 – BUILD A SOLID FOUNDATION

Whatever your starting point, you want to see the best results in the shortest amount of time and that’s completely understandable. However, it is this thought process at the beginning of your journey that leads to the weight reappearing at the end.

It’s important for sustainable weight loss that you think about and build long term. This means forgetting about losing 6lbs in your first week and thinking more about slow and steady progress of about lbs per week over a longer period of time.

In fact, I would even forget about counting calories and focus on losing weight in the first 4 weeks so you can build a strong and healthy foundation. A healthy baseline helps to eliminate foods that cause you inflammation, intestinal bloating, fluid retention, and lethargy. Replace these foods with cleaner, more alkaline ones to restore the natural PH balance in your gut, reduce inflammation, and give you the opportunity to build on your diet.

  • TIP #2 – HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT DIET

The most important thing here is that you choose the right path for yourself.

Just because your friend Karen lost 2 ice cubes in her juice pack, doesn’t mean it’s the same for you.

First, you need to be realistic with your goals and the time frame you want to achieve them.

For example, there’s no point in setting a goal to reduce ice by 6 in the next 10 months because that’s a very difficult goal to achieve.

It will mean pretty drastic changes to your current diet and lifestyle that are hard to maintain after 10 months. And because of the challenges involved, you may face a lot of ups and downs during that 10-month period, and the ups and downs can be very impactful on your mindset. It is these downsides that can lead to you giving up on your diet and overall goals.

A much more achievable and healthier goal is to aim to lose 3 stone in 12 months.

Once you’ve set this goal, break it down into more manageable chunks, such as losing an average of 1lb per week.

That’s 42 weeks to lose 3 stones. Add in the first 4 weeks of building a foundation where we don’t focus on weight loss and that gives you 48 weeks over the next 12 months to lose 42lbs.

And celebrate every 1lb you lose! 1lb is 2 regular sized packs of butter from the supermarket so definitely worth celebrating, don’t you think?!

  • TIP #3 – GET ADVICE

You’ve built a solid foundation, chosen a diet that works for you, and set smaller realistic goals.

All you have to do now is be consistent for the next 12 months.

Continue to eat foods that are good for you 90% of the time and try to be active every day (how much you eat and exercise will depend on the diet you are following)

Allow yourself to accept 10% on food and outings etc. to stay healthy and let this new diet and lifestyle be more than just a diet and lifestyle you really enjoy but also a diet you can maintain for the rest of your life.

That’s my advice and what has worked for my clients over the years and I know it can help most people reading this post as well.
