COVID-19: How it affects men’s sexual health. Fever, shortness of breath, fatigue, and loss of smell or taste are common symptoms of COVID-19 for us. New research has suggested that COVID-19 may also lead to erectile dysfunction (ED).

It’s been recognized that f COVID-19 survivors can develop sexual and reproductive health problems. The virus has been detected in the testicles, so it may affect the testicle’s ability to function. This can affect both sperm production and testosterone production.

Researchers are uncertain about the link between COVID-19 and ED. But a number of factors can lead to the likelihood of ED onset after COVID-19.

One factor is viruses that cause problems in the body’s blood vessels. The virus causes high levels of inflammation in the body as a defense response. High levels of inflammation can cause small blood clots to form, as well as inflame the lining of blood vessels. These two features combined can disrupt blood flow – one of the most important factors in achieving an erection.

Indirectly, COVID-19 can worsen an existing heart condition such as inflammation of the heart or an irregular heartbeat. Medications to treat these conditions, such as beta-blockers, can cause ED as a side effect.

Possible effects on penis and testicles

Another theory is that long-term COVID-19 complications can lead to scarring of erectile tissue.

COVID-19 causes severe physiological and psychological stress, leading to lower testosterone levels and increased release of stress hormones. While testosterone levels will return to normal after the disease goes into remission, the loss of testosterone can lead to fibrosis of the penile tissue, which is a more difficult condition to treat and to recover from.

There is also evidence that the coronavirus has an impact on the testicles. The virus enters the cells with the help of a protein common in the testicles. The testicles are where most of the testosterone in men is made, and so COVID-19 can lower testosterone levels in the body.

Lower testosterone levels can contribute to erectile dysfunction, as well as decreased energy, sex drive, and muscle mass. Lower testosterone levels can also exacerbate the body’s inflammatory response, causing massive damage to blood vessels.

The role of mental health

Even if you don’t have COVID-19, the stress of disrupted routines because of the pandemic can take an unexpected toll on your sex life.

Having the right mindset is an important part of being able to engage in sexual activity and achieve an erection. Stress, anxiety, and depression can be potential causes of erectile dysfunction. As these emotions become heightened during a prolonged pandemic, many men may also develop ED.
