How is it OK to share video of people fleeing a mass shooter?

I’ve watched enough disaster movies to know what a fleeing mob looks like – people running, screaming, panicking. That’s one thing if the movie spin-offs are running from Chitauri in Avengersbut it was another incredibly disturbing, unnecessary Twitter video as a crowd of Milwaukee Bucks fans tried to watch their team beat the Celtics in Game 6 of the conference semifinals.

No, I have no link to the fans running from a shooting wound three people one block from Deer County on a Friday night because you’ve probably seen it, and if you’re interested, it’s a quick Google search. All of the victims – two men in their 20s and a 16-year-old girl – are expected to survive.

According to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, the number of fans watching the game in the popular viewing area outside the Fiserv Forum was around 11,000, so of course the hysteria would spread quickly.

It’s incredibly sad that the lack of casualties makes it easy to share footage of people who, in this moment, perhaps thought they were running for their lives. For all they know it could be a deranged mass shooter with a bag full of ammunition. And we still don’t know if it was a mass photograph. According to Milwaukee Police Captain Warren Allen, a 19-year-old man has been detained in connection with the incident.

And then, in the evening, just a few blocks from the scene of the shooting near the gymnasium, 17 people were shot. All of those injured in that incident are also expected to survive, and 10 have been taken into custody, with nine guns recovered, officials said.

If you add in a 20-year-old man shot and wounded on North Water Street near West Highland Avenue, 21 people in all was a victim of gun violence in downtown Milwaukee on Friday night. His injuries aren’t life-threatening either, so that’s good news.

So yeah, I’m fine with not embedding that tweet and depriving the reader of a batch clip to start their Saturday.
