Indian Railways will now use Google navigation tools Google Map to link the location of candidates appearing in its exams with the test centers. In the first, Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) exam will provide candidates test centers within a radius of 300 km. This move is intended to cut down on travel time.
For years, Railway exam candidates have complained about the test centers being far from their homes. This not only means they travel long distances but also spend on accommodation and food.
“With this, we are linking each candidate’s pin code to an exam center within 300 km of their residence via Google Maps. In addition, we are ensuring that the centers This place has easy access to various means of transport such as buses and trains, if this a senior official told PTI news agency.
When does the process begin?
The process begins as soon as this month. It will be rolled out in Level 6 and Level 4 computer tests to be held later this month (July 30). About 60,000 candidates are likely to appear for the test at about 90 centers for 7,026 posts.
“As of now, we have been able to accommodate about 99% of applicants who have been offered centers within 300 km, while 100% of female applicants are offered within 400 km.” the official added.
Most of the candidates took to Twitter after the RRB released exam cities links for the final episode of the exam, raising concerns about the remote centers allotted to them.
One Twitter user from Kolkata said she had been assigned a center in Karnataka, while a candidate in Bengaluru complained about being allotted one in Ranchi, about 1,900 kilometers away. Another candidate said her center is 900 km from her hometown.
Officials said candidates will receive centers within range, but it could be in a neighboring state with good connectivity.
However, in the Northeastern states, Railways has difficulty supplying applicants within 300 kilometers because there are only a handful of test centers, they said.
