House Rules Package Approved Amid Concerns About McCarthy’s Concessions

“Some kind of agreement was made for a majority of 20 people to vote for McCarthy as speaker, but this deal was done privately, behind closed doors,” said Representative Nancy Mace. , the Republic of South Carolina wrote in a letter to its voters on Monday. “We can’t think of anything more ‘swamp’ than a member of Congress telling the American people they’re keeping the speaker’s vote because they’re ‘fighting’ the ‘swamp’ just to broker for some behind-the-scenes deal, hidden from the American people.”

However, Ms Mace, who had initially signaled that she might oppose the package of rules because she and other ordinary lawmakers had yet to be informed of the full extent of Mr McCarthy’s concessions, ultimately still support this law.

Democrats opposed the rules but said they were even more worried about what else the speaker had agreed to in exchange for key support.

“What I don’t care about is not just what is written here,” Representative Jim McGovern of Massachusetts, the top Democrat on the Rules Committee, said as he pointed to the package of rules. “I am concerned about the secret deals Speaker McCarthy made with the Freedom Caucus in exchange for their votes.”

The Democratic Party was joined by a Republican. Representative Tony Gonzales, Republican of Texas, opposed the legislation, citing concerns that McCarthy’s deal with the rebels on spending changes would result in significant cuts to the nation’s defense budget. That prospect is a “terrible idea,” he said.

“I’ll be visiting Taiwan here in a few weeks,” he said on CBS. “How can I look my allies in the eye and say, ‘I need you to increase your defense budget’, but the US is reducing our budget?”

But Mr. McCarthy’s team succeeded in minimizing desertion. It is a preview of the task the speaker faces as he works to appease the far right while maintaining the support of a much larger group of more mainstream conservatives to pass any legislation. in the House of Commons, where he was able to accept fewer than some defectors.
