House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy, in a letter to his private meeting on Wednesday, officially announced his intention to run for Speaker of the House.
“I am running as Speaker of the House of Representatives and humbly ask for your support,” McCarthy said in a letter obtained by NPR.
Republicans are expected to pick enough seats to win control of the House, but as the results continue to pour in, it’s clear they won’t get the big returns they hoped for earlier.
Even so, McCarthy, currently the minority leader in the House, is expected to run for the top leadership position of the House and no one is currently challenging the California congressman for the position.
The internal vote inside the GOP conference is scheduled for next week but the full House of Representatives will not vote until early January at the start of the new General Assembly.
Also Wednesday, Whip of House Republican Steve Scalise, R-La., sent a letter to his colleague announce its bid to the Majority Leader. Scalise said he would work with the House committee chairmen to hold Democrats and the Biden administration accountable for what he called the “damage” they caused “to the House and the the rest of the country.”
