Intrepid Hot Rod Charlie attempted a late return to deny a late rally from GI Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike during GII Lukas Classic S. Saturday below Twin Spiers. Favored at 6-5, the bay rushed to impress Art Collector (Bernardini) through the openings of: 23.55 and: 47.94. Turning up the heat in three-quarters unfolds in 1:11.77, Bay takes control when entering a long bend and has his nose in front at the top of the ramp. Rich Strike ramped up external strength and quickly headed Hot Rod Charlie, but the intrepid 4-year-old dug deep to deny the Derby winner in the dark of the rope.
Last year’s GI Pennsylvania Derby winner, Hot Rod Charlie was crowned second place in both the G1 Dubai World Cup in March and the GIII Salvatore Mile on June 18.
