HoloLens chief Alex Kipman is leaving Microsoft following allegations of misconduct

Alex KipmanLead developer of Microsoft HoloLens, will leave the company, according to Insiders. His departure comes after the same newspaper reported that he made inappropriate groping and comments towards female employees. He is also said to have fostered a culture that reduces the contribution of women. After Kipman told his team of his resignation, Microsoft’s VP of AI and AI Scott Guthrie announced a reorganization that would split the HoloLens team. In an email also viewed by GeekWire, Guthrie said that the HoloLens hardware team is joining the Windows+ Devices team under the direction of Panos Panay. Meanwhile, the software teams are joining the Experience + Devices division under the direction of Jeff Teper.

Guthrie also wrote that he and Kipman have talked about the team’s path over the past few months, and that they “together decided that this was the right time for him to leave the company to pursue other opportunities.” Kipman looks set to help with the team transition over the next two months before leaving Microsoft altogether.

Before Insiders that piece report on allegations against Kipman, a source said he watched what was essentially VR porn in the office in front of his employees. A former executive also told the publication that they had witnessed him misbehaving with women on more than one occasion. He recalled an incident in which Kipman was said to have repeatedly massaged a female employee’s shoulder even as she repeatedly shrugged her shoulders to ask him to stop. Managers are said to have told employees not to leave women alone around him. In the end, 25 people compiled a report about bad experiences they had with the executive.

Microsoft has not confirmed or denied the allegations against Insidersbut the company told the publication that “any complaints reported [it] take[s] investigated and for every complaint proven actionable. “
