Highgate sales hopeful for ‘brilliant’ launch

Jill Gordon and Jacob West’s new venture Highgate Sales looks to be off to a good start with its first shipment at the upcoming Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Winter Mixed Sale. They have a very good chance of doing so thanks to the star of the 10 horse, GI runner-up La Brea S. Great cutting (Sightstown) (Hips 541).

“We couldn’t be more delighted to offer her on behalf of this ownership group [Boom Racing, ERJ Racing, Dave Kenney and William Strauss],” said Gordon. “They’re a fun group and I’ve had some luck in the past selling some pastries to them. They don’t spawn, so we thought we’d make money while the iron was hot. From the buyer’s point of view, you have limitless possibilities. You can take care of her for the rest of the year or you can take her directly to the barn. She is by a top male parent in Sightstown. You combine her looks, her pedigree, and her race record and she’s a complete package for the buyer. “

The Brilliant Cut was claimed by these connectors and trainer Doug O’Neill for $50,000 from a fourth claim win attempt at Del Mar in the fall of 2020. Third place went to about winner La Brea Kalypso (Brody’s Cause) in the winter GII Santa Ynez S., she placed next fourth in GIII La Virgenes S.

With a brief refresh, Brilliant Cut returns in the grassy Unzip Me S. in Arcadia on October 3, on Wednesday. Back in the dirt, she’s back on her way to winning in an optional claimant starting October 30. Launched 20-1 at La Brea, she’s on track. pressure from the second most part of the way and continued to finish correctly.

“We toyed with the idea [of selling her] a little before La Brea and after that effort, obviously [selling in a breeding stock sale] Gordon said. “She shipped to Kentucky the first week of January and she has been selling pre-sale at Nick Drion’s farm ever since. I really appreciate all the hard work he put in. He did a great job and she couldn’t be in better hands.”

Brilliant Cut has a pedigree that matches her ever-improving race record and lovely physique. Lemieux’s half-sister (Nyquist) acquired a stake in Gulfstream last term and is gearing up for her 3-year-old season. Their beat polishes a diamond (Factor) is one half for SW & MGISP Bonnie Blue Flag (Mineshaft), is the dam of one of the most exciting horses in training, GI Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner and recent GI Pegasus World Cup runner Life is Good (Into Mischief). Polishing a diamond is also a half for MGISW Diamondrella, who is the beater of GSW Spectroscopy (Medaglia d’Oro), and to the Top Title SW (Tapit).

“It’s a family that’s exploded from top to bottom,” says Gordon. “Life is Good obviously gave us a really good update over the weekend. Her 3-year-old half-sister Lemieux was a stake winner last year and has returned to the desk for [Mark] Ham. It’s a family that seems to have a new update every week. ”

Gordon and West announced the launch of their new sales agent and blood supply just before Christmas, and this February shipment will be their first under the Highgate banner. Gordon brings a wealth of experience to the shipment from her previous roles at Claiborne Farms and Warrendale Sales.

When asked what led to this new venture, Gordon said, “It’s something I’ve been thinking about for a long time. I sat down with Jacob West, who was obviously a very successful agent and a very good friend of mine. We decided to just jump in and do it. We have very complementary skill sets and we work well together. I sold horses to him in the past. We decided to just take a leap of faith. I have a good group of clients that will support me and Jacob brings a lot to the table. “

The Highgate Banner will appear during this season’s major stallion and racehorse sale.

“We will breed, racehorse and fingerlings,” said Gordon. “We will be doing a sale in April in Keeneland, [Fasig] July, hope a [Fasig] Saratoga shipment and then we will immediately move to September in Keeneland. ”

While the Brilliant Cut may be the star of Highgate’s makeover, the remaining nine mares also have a lot to offer potential customers.

“We have a really interesting shipment from start to finish,” says Gordon. “We feel like every horse we bring in has something to offer in terms of appeal. We have Vacay (Not this time) (Hips 501). She is an interesting person. She is the winner of bets on two and many bets are placed on three. She is by Not this timePeople couldn’t have had a better few months. “

She added, “We have mares in mare to red mares, like Munnings, Music by Maclean and Link. We also have a potential customer for the Into Mischief nurturing model [Speeding (Hip 502)] with a lot of charm. She was the winner herself and her 3-year-old brother was recently put down as a 2-year-old and is back at the desk for Arnaud Delacour. ”

As expected when starting a new business, Gordon began his first sale with Highgate with a mixture of anxiety and excitement.

“I think any time you start something new, there’s a certain amount of nerves associated with that,” she says. “We have a great team around us. I have a guy Jose Vaquera who will run the barn with me. He has traveled with me from place to place, so having him there with me is a great consolation. We are excited to get started. This is something we’ve been brainstorming and working on for a while. We are very excited to bring what we think is a truly quality herd for our first sale. “
