Hi-de-Hi! actress Ruth Madoc dies aged 79 following accident | Ents & Arts News



Hi-de-Hi! Actress Ruth Madoc has passed away at the age of 79, her agent confirmed in a statement.

Best known for playing Gladys Pugh on the 1980s camp sitcom Hi-de-Hi!, she had previously starred in the Christmas pantomime Aladdin in Torquay, but was forced to withdraw. retired earlier this week after a fall.

Phil Belfield of talent management firm Belfield & Ward Ltd, described her as “a unique talent loved by many”.

He said: “We are saddened to announce the death of our dear and much-loved customer, Ruth Madoc.

“Ruth passed away on the afternoon of Friday 9 December while in hospital following surgery from a fall earlier in the week that forced her to withdraw from the panto in Torquay.

“From film work like Fiddler On The Roof and Under Milk Wood with Richard Burton and her iconic TV performance as Gladys Pugh in Hi De Hi! and more recently in Little Britain and on the Courtyard. With Calendar Girls (a play and musical), plus recent acclaim in the short films Skinny Fat and Cardiff, she is truly a national treasure and is looking forward to getting back on the road in 2023. with The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.

“A true legend of British entertainment, she is one of those kind and uniquely talented people loved by many. She passed away too soon. Our hearts are broken!
