Here’s what’s coming to RPS in 2023

Hello friends. I think there might be some kind of law that forbids people to wish Tet when you say it on the last day of January, but never mind, I’m doing it anyway. Happy New Year everybody. Let’s talk about all the exciting things coming to RPS in 2023.

The first half of 2023 is positively coming with some pretty good looking video games at the moment. Heck, when we all returned from our Christmas slumber in early January, our list The most anticipated game for the year stretched to 101 – and even then, I had to bite my own hand to not make it any longer. It’s a good feeling to know there’s so much fun to write about over the next six months and beyond – especially when there was a point last summer when every game and their dog seems to be on hold, leaving us with a real hole about neat new games to let you know.

Of course, we’ll do our best to bring you the latest on all those great new gaming nuggets throughout the year, but as hinted in my note on comment email notifications Last week, I wanted to take a moment to talk about all the other new things I want to do on RPS this year. Things like the new casual feature, the new community project, and finally the first RPS Game Club.

RPS Game Club! That’s one thing!

Let’s talk about the last one first. The RPS . Game Club is very recent. Essentially a book club devoted to video games, RPS supporters will know this is a long time in the making. Mainly because we hope to be able to offer regular free game keys for it as part of our RPS Premium tier. However, the plan to ensure a reliable monthly source of said game keys is still in progress, so instead of waiting and potentially never starting, we will go ahead and do it anyway. way, mainly focusing on free games or at least those with very low entry costs. Therefore, the RPS Game Club will be open to everyone, regardless of whether you are an RPS supporter or not, and I will soon announce a schedule of what we will be playing every month.

However, the basic gist: we pick a game at the beginning of the month, we spend the next few weeks playing it, and then we host a series of discussion posts at the end of the month so all of them We can discuss that game. This will include a live blog session where you can chat with us and other readers about the game in real time, and other question-and-answer posts where you can chat at speed. more leisurely in the comments section.

Ask RPS whatever you like

Speaking of question-style articles, I can recommend Ask RPS – a new series of posts where you ask us a question and we write a post containing the answer! Such simple. Questions can be about anything and are directed at any team member you like – although I do ask that we try to keep them as video game-focused as possible. No need to ask us what we ate last night, because I promise you, my weekly Chef Consumption is not as interesting as you think.

For starters, I’ll give RPS supporters (Standard and Premium) we’ll cover asking RPS questions first, but we’ll open it up to everyone if/when we run out of supporter questions. I’ll be making a separate post for these questions as well, so don’t jump in the comments below, eager beavers. There’s a chance I might miss it.

Have your say in our reader-voted all-time genre list

However, the third new thing is something that everyone can participate in. Following on from the great feedback we had last year RPS 100: Reader’s EditionI’m so glad we’re not only doing another Reader Edition this year, but every month I’ll also be collecting your votes for your favorite games by genre – Reader’s version of our best games list, basically, count down your favorite RPGs, first-person shooters, horror games, survival games, etc. Again, find a dedicated post about February’s list later this week where I’ll ask you what you liked best. strategy games of all time, to celebrate the launch of Company Of Heroes 3 on February 23.

New features and columns

Those are the three big projects I’ve lined up for the RPS in 2023, but there’s a lot of other smaller things going on along with them. We will continue with all our usual features and columns such as RPS . Time Capsulesours Review GOTY post, Alice0’s quest to find the best in video games in What’s better?focus on Sin Vega’s strategy Assembly point column (and her first indie recs backer in scouting report), as well as Rick Lane’s VR exploration in Actual bytes column.

But our own Alice Bee has also made a New Year’s resolution to play every Nancy Drew game in existencefollow up from her November Adventures with Nancy Drew: Midnight In Salemand our guide writer and Sims fanatic Rebecca resident will entertain us with monthly observations and anecdotes from her years as Sims-ing in one New monthly Sims column. The first of these will be published very soon, so keep an eye out for that.

Goodbye The Nate Files, hello great new video show

Alas, there is one thing we must say goodbye to this year. Exclusive podcast for our supporters Nate file is now over, but another exciting new thing will appear in its place. Vid bud Liam will gather one first supporter-focused independent video program, review new or upcoming games in the same genre. This will be exclusive to RPS Premium supporters for the first month, but will then be available to everyone after that point. We’re still calculating its frequency at the moment – along with Inventory Space and another new thing I’ll cover in a minute, we’ll probably watch a show every few months or so, but we will have more to share about this soon.

Even more podcasts

As for the other new thing Liam is working on, you actually knew about it. It’s our new biweekly Podcast Indiescovery, Liam co-hosted with Rebecca and review editor Rachel. I’m glad RPS’ podcast empire is expanding in this direction, especially when it’s coming in The new wireless electronics exhibition is relaunched, will be back this weekend after a short hiatus. And EWS also returns with a brand new co-host – James Archer, our very own hardware editor. He’s joining Alice Bee and Nate (RPS in peace) to talk about everything in video games, and I’d be happy to hear what you think of the slightly revamped magazine-style format, too. Keep an eye out for that on the regular channels on Thursday.

(Alice Bee also has is different podcast is live right now, but it’s still in early production at the moment and I don’t want to spoil the surprise. We’ll share more about it as soon as we can).

Senior staff writer Ed and tutorial writer Hayden are also improving their FPS focus Top sound bang podcast a bit this year, introducing a new segment where they look at lesser known FPS subgenres along with all the latest FPS happenings. First is, they’re playing theHunter: Call Of The Wildand you may discover some more words about their experience with the Open World hunting simulation on the website in the coming weeks.

News in a letter, what do you say?

And finally, you may have noticed that we now have daily and weekly newsletters. They are now fully automated, delivering a collection of the most commented posts we published on the site that day/week directly to your inbox. But once our tech team has worked wonders on a few extra pieces of code at the bottom of the site, I want to start working on a monthly newsletter filled with curated hidden indie gems. that we broadcast , either collect things that we have written about them on the website, or new words specifically for the newsletter about them if we can’t arrange them to fit everything else. It’s impossible to say when we might start this process, but as soon as the tech team finishes their work, I’ll let you know.

Phew! I think so. So there’s a lot of exciting things happening this year, and many of them are centered around you, our lovely readers. I will go into more detail about supporter-specific content in my next section Letter from the editoravailable for all Standard and Premium subscribers, but I’d love to know your thoughts on all of this in the comments section below. Anything you’re particularly excited about? Or could not care less? There may be some obvious things that you think we should be doing but aren’t right now. Any and all feedback will be gratefully received. In any case, I hope you agree that, in addition to all the exciting new games coming out, there’s a lot of fun right here at RPS – and I look forward to posting more on all of this soon. .
