2016 Olympic athlete Hector (16-0, 10 KOs) and his coach, Bob Santos, believe they have what it takes to beat Tank (27-0.25 KOs), who has not yet been tested. examined by elite level competition during his nine years of professional career.
Like many other boxers, Tank has been carefully guarded by his supporters. Until recently, 28-year-old Gervonta was promoted by Mayweather Promotions, and their boss, Floyd Mayweather Jr, was uninterested in letting him be examined by the likes of Vasyl Lomachenko, Shakur Stevenson, Teofimo Lopez, Ryan Garcia, and George Kambosos Jr.
Now that Gervonta is no longer in the Mayweather promotion, he’s spreading his wings and being tested by Hector Garcia for the first time, and there’s no way of knowing how he’ll do.
We know that Tank wrestled with walking boxer Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero, and he didn’t look good until he knocked out the Mayweather Promotion’s steady-state boxer in the sixth round. During Tank’s bout with Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz and Leo Santa Cruz, he had trouble dealing with the pressure and their boxing skills.
Hector overcame consecutive setbacks in 2022, beating Roger Gutierrez and Chris Colbert. If he can do the same against Tank Davis, it will be a great start to 2023 and show the boxing world that Gervonta has never been the boxer that people think he is.
In other words, Tank is the product of careful matchmaking by his promoters at Mayweather Promotions.
“From a public point of view, we are the losers. As far as we know, we feel he’s the most successful boxer Gervonta ever fought in his prime,” coach Bob Santos told fight TV center about his boxer Hector Luis Garcia ahead of next Saturday’s fight against Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis.
“We couldn’t be more delighted with the way things have turned out and we wouldn’t change anything from any other fight to prepare for him.
“From the point of view of the public or the weirdos, they see us as weaker than [Chris] Colbert and whatever they did against us [Roger] Gutierrez. His amateur pedigree, his experience and the stuff he brings to life.
“He is at his peak, and he will be the best opponent Gervonta has ever faced in his career, that is for sure. Obviously it’s a business and they feel they can get the best financial edge for themselves and they’ll fend for themselves. It’s a financial business.
“I don’t put too much into that. He is [Tank] must defeat this man in front of him first, and must not disrespect Ryan Garcia. Maybe he’s the next Oscar De La Hoya. I do not know. He may be the next Roberto Duran, but as of today, we have the one who made the Olympics. [Hector Garcia]and he was sitting right next to me.
“We have a man who has won the championship and he is sitting right next to me, and we have a man who has won the world championship. Ryan Garcia failed to do any of those three things.
“So to this point, to this day, this is the most reliable fighter that Gervonta Davis has ever fought,” Santos said.
“I will tell Gervonta that he needs to worry about certainties in life. I’m not so sure,” Hector Garcia said. “The fact that he was playing against Ryan Garcia, I’m not sure if it was a mental game or something.
“I am the real Garcia. In the Ryan Garcia-Tank fight, I picked Garcia, but for now, Gervonta has to worry about me, the real Garcia,” Hector said.
“Plus, we’ve been down this road before,” Santos said. “Chris Colbert, he’s ready to think he’s going to be crowned by beating him [Hector Garcia] and go straight in [Roger] Gutierrez fought and won his world title.
“That’s why you fight, and you win in the ring. You don’t win the media wars, you don’t win the paper wars. You win matches in the ring, and that’s what this man will be willing to do on January 7th.
“We have nothing but respect for him [Tank] Davis. I never spoke ill of him in the media. I don’t know where it came from. Maybe it’s his team trying to raise him up psychologically.
“I have walked down this road many times. It won’t affect me as his head coach, and this man here [Hector Garcia] there were 400 amateur matches. He comes from a third world country, the Dominican Republic, and none of that can stop him from doing what he needs to do,” Santos said.
“The first time we met was at the press conference when we met face to face. That was the first time we met,” Hector Garcia said of Tank Davis. “Even face to face, I can tell he’s working really hard in the gym getting ready for me.”
“The reason why I feel confident that we will win this match is because of all the adversities he has been through,” Santos said of Hector. One, all the adversities he went through. From his father and his military background, and everything that you have to go through in those countries just to survive.
“You are fighting for your life every day where he is. From that to his amateur pedigree to his experience in the ring, I feel confident that he will win with all that he will be able to bring from there into the ring. that night, and that is what will lead us to victory.
Santos said of Hector Garcia: “Everything that he went through, all his amateur experience, and that is what gives me the whole conference and the way he works in the gym right away. now.
“I made a lot of sacrifices to get where I am, and I paid my dues and by January 7, I will get W,” Hector said.

“I think Gervonta can fight on many levels. He can fight at mid-range, he can fight from the inside and he can fight from the outside,” Santos said. “I think that is completely baseless. Name another 135-pound person with a better background than him.
“He beat Isaac Cruz, went to 140 and beat Mario Barrios. He [Barrios] went away with Keith Thurman. He stopped Mario Barrios,” Santos said of Tank Davis.
“I don’t know how they see it from that point of view. He hits Gamboa, stop him. Gamboa fought Devin Haney and went some distance with him.
“We obviously know he’s a great puncher, but you still have to deliver that great punch. This guy [Hector Garcia] entered the ring and had 400 amateur fights. He has seen everything under the sun.
“We’re not too worried because this guy here can also fight at all three levels. You don’t have 400 amateur games, you don’t go to the Pan Am games, and you don’t go to the Olympics.
“He was in there with everyone. He’s been there with Devin Haney, he’s been there with Rolly, and he’s been there with the big boxers. He was there with Alberto Cuello; he was there with Carlos Adames and the others in our gym and stuff like that.
“This guy has all the experience, all the tools needed to win this war. How it plays out, we don’t know because one punch can change everything in either direction.
“With that said, we feel confident that we will win the match, and again, he can also fight at all three levels. He can get in, head to toe, outside, mid-range, whatever it takes to get W, and that’s what he’ll be willing to do,” Santos said.
“It’s going to be a spectacular battle, it’s going to be a battle, and that’s what we’re waiting to see as the battle unfolds,” Hector said.
