HBO Cancels Westworld, Final Season Won’t Happen
In a shocking decision, HBO canceled the hit sci-fi TV series Westworld after four seasons. This news comes as Season 4 ended this past August.
Based on The Hollywood Reporter, HBO is continuing to develop Westworld, but this is not where the series is expected to end. Co-creator Jonathan Nolan told Limit line last month that “We’re always planning a fifth and final season. We’re still in discussions with the carrier. We’re hoping to make them.”
Both Nolan and co-creator Lisa Joy had an ending they wanted to achieve, but sadly, they won’t be able to achieve it now.
In a statement from HBO (via THR), the network said, “Over the past four seasons, Lisa and Jonah have taken viewers on an exciting adventure that elevates at every step. We’re incredibly grateful. them, along with their incredibly talented cast, producer and crew, and all of our partners at Kilter Films, Bad Robot and Warner Bros. Television. with them on this journey.”
Debuting in 2016, the series is based on Michael Crichton’s 1973 film of the same name. A wild west theme park featuring lifelike robots that exist and cater to the rich. However, some robots malfunctioned, creating chaos. Subsequent seasons explore more of the world created by Joy and Nolan.
Westworld stars Evan Rachel Wood, Jeffrey Wright, Ed Harris, Thandiwe Newton, Tessa Thompson, and James Marsden. During its time on HBO, the series won seven Emmy Awards and was nominated for many more.
