Hawaii’s historic waves crash into homes, weddings, businesses as the south sweeps in
Big waves hit parts of Hawaii over the weekend and into Monday, with videos showing water flooding into homes, celebrations and more.
Officials last week guess a “historic” bulge that would bring big waves to the south-facing shores of Hawaii. The Hawaii Department of Land and Resources confirmed Sunday that a 25-foot wavefront was reported by the department’s Conservation and Resources Enforcement Division.
The department said on Facebook: “Surf levels on the south coast are the highest in more than 25 years as predicted.
And the waves, fueled by the remnants of Hurricane Darby, continued this week, even though Darby weakened into a tropical storm and then a downpour, According to Accuweather.
The National Weather Service “will produce dangerous breaking waves and localized flooding in some low-lying areas south facing the coasts of all islands today” said on Monday.

A video that quickly went viral on social media showed waves crashing into two-story apartments in Keauhou-Kona. Isabella Sloan, videographer, tell Hawaii News Now that her apartment “was attacked for the first time and flooded everything.”
Waves also hit Dillon and Riley Murphy’s Saturday wedding in Kailua-Kona.
“We were right in time to start moving a few things and, yes, this great wall has basically just come out,” said Dillon. tell KHON2. “And luckily there was no food in any of the containers, luckily the cake made it.”
Communities across the state began cleanup efforts on Sunday, Hawaii News Now reportedafter several businesses and homes were flooded and roads were closed due to damage.
