Have you played… Painkiller: Black Edition?

Like so many games deep in my Steam library, I’m not sure when I bought it Painkiller: Black Edition or my exact reason for doing so. I hope it is cheap in some kind of daily sale. Maybe I was getting a hangover, and was hoping a little gift would ease my headache. I vaguely recall starting it up once, perhaps a decade ago, and not going beyond its main menu. Painkiller was destined to rot in a digital purgatory of my own design forever, a humble icon that I will roll over on my way to reinstalling. Fate 2 12th time without thinking a bit. That is, until Valve finally sent me Steam floor.

Katharine recently spoke with James and Liam about her first impressions of the Steam Deck.

Why did I decide Painkiller will be the first game I play on my handheld PC? For the same reason that I bought it in the first place, I assume: I have no clue. My guess is that it appears to be a throwback shooter from the mid-00s that has yet to be tested on the Deck by Valve itself, which I find tantalizing as a new Deck owner. Will this game I know nothing about work on my fancy new tech? It’s a question I’ve asked almost constantly, and was excited to discover the answer.

Well, imagine my surprise that not only does Painkiller run like a dream on deck, but this 18 year old PC game shows purpose built for handheld play. Painkiller is an arena shooter that literally takes you into a vast expanse before slaying hordes of gruesome enemies at you. There is no rhyme or reason for the places you visit; One second you’re shooting guys in the middle of Venice’s waterways, the next you’re blasting witches in the flaming streets of a medieval village. Your goal is simply to kill everything, before moving on to a new part of the level to kill some than things. Finally the level is over, the game is throwing darts at a moving wheel with a sign above it that says “POSITION IDEAS” and before you know it, you are shooting the undead soldiers next to you. under a UFO.

If you play this game on PC, I think it will feel disjointed and messy. But on the Deck? Exploding through a level while waiting for the kettle to boil or during a break in an episode of Taskmaster is absolutely amazing. Saber Interactive is currently working on a sequel and I can’t wait to see what they have in store.
