‘Harry and Meghan’: What We Learned from the Netflix Series
“Harry and Meghan,” the Netflix series that released Thursday, is one of the most anticipated TV series of the year — more of a media event than a documentary.
Royal followers have been eagerly anticipating the directed series Liz Garbusalthough Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, gave an interview to Oprah Winfreylast year: In that interview, they discussed their strained relationship with the British royal family and Meghan She said she had had suicidal thoughts. Prince Harry also gives several similarly candid interviews, including James Corden.
The series begins with an on-screen announcement emphasizing its authenticity: “This is a first-hand account of Harry and Meghan’s story, told with never-before-seen personal archives.” Members of the royal family “refuse to comment,” it added.
The documentary is set in a changed royal setting following the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September. King Charles III — Harry’s father — is expected to be crowned next May. The next three volumes will be released on December 15.
Here are the main points:
Harry’s battle with the media continues
The first episode tells the story of Harry and Meghan’s love, but it also criticizes the British media.
Harry said the paparazzi have always had an influence on his life. Although he has very little recollection of his mother, Princess Diana’s childhood, he says, “most of my memories are of being surrounded by the paparazzi. Rarely do we go on a vacation without someone jumping out of the bushes with a camera or something.”
Harry said photographers continued to hunt him when he went to school and started dating. The paparazzi had harassed his girlfriend, he added, and their family’s lives were “turned upside down” as a result. When he met Meghan, he said, “I’m so scared she’s being shunned by the media – it’s the media that has kept so many people away from me.”
Meghan and Harry have long criticized British tabloid culture and have taken legal action against a number of British newspapers to invade their privacy.
The couple wanted to continue Diana’s legacy
Harry says that Meghan’s harassment by the media is reminiscent of the experience of his mother, who died in a 1997 car crash in Paris after being stalked by the paparazzi. But he also makes positive comparisons between his wife and mother.
He said in the first episode of the series: “What kind of person is Meghan and her personality is very similar to my mother. “She has the same compassion, the same empathy, she has the same confidence, she has the same warmth about her.”
Harry said he also considers himself a continuation of Diana’s legacy. “I am my mother’s son,” he said. Of his philanthropic work, he added, “I wanted to somehow carry my mother’s torch and try to keep her legacy alive and try to make her proud.”
