Hardware gains help November video game sales reach first growth in a year (NYSE:SONY)

Video game sales marked their first year-over-year gain in more than a year in November, recording a 3% increase as holiday shopping began to bring a strong recovery to control panel and accessories.

Total revenue in November rose from the previous November to $6.286 billion, according to NPD Group. Sales in October were unchanged from the same period last yearand previously saw 11 consecutive months of declines from the previous period.

And while video games Content sales reversed back to decline, down 5% from the previous November (to $4.742 billion), hardware sales increased 45% to $1.254 billion, led by (NYSE:SONY) PlayStation 5, the month’s best-selling product in units and dollars, overtakes Nintendo’s Switch (OTCPK:NTDOY).

Analyst Mat Piscatella noted that accessory sales also increased 10% to $289 million, driven by double-digit percentage increases in both gamepads and headsets/headphones. November’s best-selling accessory is the PlayStation 5 DualSense Galactic Purple Wireless Controller.

Game content has been removed by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (NASDAQ:ATVI) consistently topped the dollar sales charts and unsurprisingly became the best-selling product of 2022, surpassing Elen’s ring (OTCPK:NCBDY). December sales will help consolidate the latest value CoD into its usual place as the top seller every year. The shooter was followed in November by three new releases – God of War: Ragnarok (SONY) in 2nd place; Pokemon: Scarlet/Violet (OTCPK:NTDOY) in 3rd place; and sound border (OTCPK:SGAMY) in 4th place.

Rounding out the top 10 November content: 5th place, NFL Frenzy 23 (EA); Number 6, fifa 23 (EA); number 7, NBA 2K23 (TTWO); 8, Knight of Gotham (white blood cells); number 9, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales (SONY); and number 10, Superstar of Mario Party (OTCPK:NTDOY).

Sensor Tower notes that spending on mobile games continues to struggle, although casino games continue to grow even as RPGs and shooters continue to falter. Mobile spending for Thanksgiving/Black Friday is down 5% year over year and down 1% from 2020.

Top 10 spent mobile games in November: Candy Crush Saga (ATVI), Roblox (RBLX), Battle Royale, Coin Master, Clash of Clans, Evony, Pokémon Go (OTCPK:NTDOY), Township, Jackpot Party – Casino Slots, and Bingo blitz (PLTK).
