Halle Bailey plays The Little Mermaid in a new teaser based on the classic 1989 Disney film

Devoted Disney fans were rewarded with a special treat earlier Friday during the Disney Expo D23 in Anaheim, California.
An official first trailer for The Little Mermaid has been released, giving you a glimpse at the live-action remake of the beloved animated film.
The film stars Halle Bailey as the Disney icon Princess Ariel, and is scheduled to hit theaters next year on May 26, 2023.

The film stars Halle Bailey as the iconic Disney princess and is scheduled to hit theaters next year on May 26, 2023.
The trailer, which will be quite nostalgic for fans who grew up with the animated film, opens with waves crashing in the sea.
Soft music starts playing in the background, slowly building up and growing louder throughout the intro.
The clip then goes deep into the sea, where the camera tracks various fish and marine animals as they swim around, teasing to get a glimpse of the Mermaid.

After seeing various adorable marine animals gliding across the screen in a flash, the camera turns to an old wreck lying on the ocean floor, paying homage to a scene from the cartoon. 1989, where Ariel discovers an abandoned shipwreck.
Suddenly, the classic character is seen on screen, with long locks and flowers floating around her and a mermaid’s colorful tail reflected in the dim light of the sea.
The camera follows Ariel as she explores her surroundings, including a luxury wooden ship, while the orchestra’s music gets louder.

Halle is heard singing beautifully when the title card momentarily appears, ‘Out at sea, wish I could be a part of that world.’ The camera then focuses on her from a higher angle as she completes the lyrics.
Excited viewers then got to their feet in front of Ariel’s classic mermaid outfit, including her vibrant green mermaid tail. The trailer ends with a release date of late next year in May 2023.

The upcoming live-action remake stars Halle Bailey as Ariel, along with other actors such as Jonah Hauer-King as Principe Eric and Melissa McCarthy as Ursula.
The plot premise will stick to the original, following Ariel’s deal with the sea witch Ursula to get human legs in exchange for her voice.
Rob Marshall directed the film and was involved in other musical projects such as Into The Woods (2014) and Chicago (2002).

During Expo D23 earlier on Friday, Halle and Rob were in attendance to discuss their excitement about the film’s much-anticipated launch.
The stunning actress, known for her role in Grown-ish, has hinted at taking on the role of Ariel, Deadline reported.
“I’m sure all of you here can relate to Ariel and how special she is to all of us,” she said. ‘As a little girl swimming in a pool, imagining herself as a mermaid, I never imagined it would be as real as this.’
Halle then discussed filming the iconic scene where she sang Part Of Your World. ‘Three days shooting Part of Your World was the most beautiful experience of my life, feeling all the sensations she was feeling, the passion, the discomfort, everything she was going through.’

Rob also weighed in on his experience bringing The Little Mermaid back to life again.
‘I have a special connection to this film. In 1989, I don’t know if you remember the excitement of hearing a musical again. According to Deadline, it’s dead, the musical is no more,'” the filmmaker explained.
‘Despite the cartoon, we could still hear people singing over and over. When Disney asked me to do this, I felt it was an incredible moment. It’s like fate,’ he added.
Disney’s original Little Mermaid animated film was released in theaters on November 17, 1989, to critical acclaim. With a budget of $40 million, the film grossed a worldwide box office total of $235 million.
The cartoon also received an Academy Award for Best Original Score along with another Academy Award for Best Original Song.
Since then, additional films and projects have been added to the The Little Mermaid franchise, including The Little Mermaid 2 (2000), which focuses on Ariel’s daughter, and the ABC live musical on 2019.
