Halfords aims to hire about 100 new apprentices this year, joining a workforce of 2,200 in 600 garages. The UK currently has a shortage of qualified engine technicians, while even fewer people are trained to do the job. Electric Car.
The Palmer Foundation, the charity set up by Andy Palmer in 2020, will work with schools to identify disadvantaged young people who may be suitable for an automotive apprenticeship. The young people will then be interviewed by Halfords, which will then cover the cost of a two-year apprenticeship, including one day a week at the university, for all successful applicants.
Apprentices will graduate with a Level Two or Level Three degree and Halfords hope that they will always find work at Halfords once the apprenticeship is complete.
The program has won government backing with prime minister Nadhim Zahawi, a former education minister, who commented: “This is a huge win for the UK automotive industry, not just bringing in new talents. new capabilities to the industry but also leveling the playing field for people from a more diverse range of backgrounds.
“As the UK economy moves forward, we need talented people in key areas like automotive and it’s great to see the Halfords and Palmer Foundation backing the government’s efforts to expand apprenticeship and fill the skills gap.”
Andy Palmer said, “When I left school at 16 with few high-profile degrees, not many people expected that I would end up leading some of the most important businesses in the auto industry. I was only able to come here through my apprenticeship, those were the best days of my life.
“It is my hope that this partnership with Halfords allows the Palmer Foundation to give the same opportunity as I was in my youth to more young people without the connections and support networks around them. Who knows? Maybe we’ll have a future CEO or two in the first issue of The Palmer Practitioner.
“We have a very backward view of motorcycle technicians in this country. Most people still think of Phil Mitchell and Kevin Webster. Today, it’s a highly technical and increasingly advanced job, and many of the most senior people in the auto industry have started apprenticeships, myself included. “
