The Montreal Canada and Vegas Golden Knights completed the transaction on Thursday, trading guard Shea Weber in exchange for Evgenii Dadonov.
Weber, a 16-year veteran, has not played since the 2020-21 season. The 36-year-old is likely to have played his last game in an NHL shirt, suffering from multiple injuries, including left foot/ankle problems. At the 2021 Stanley Cup Playoffs, Weber injured his thumb, ending the season.
A seven-time All-Star, Weber played more than 1,000 NHL games in his career for the Nashville Predators and Canadianiens, translate 224 goals and 365 assists.
Weber’s current contract still has four years left, ending after the 2025-26 season. Weber Signed a 14-year, $110 million contract with the Nashville Predators in 2012, matching an offer made to the guard from the Philadelphia Flyers.
Vegas is likely to put Weber on a long-term disability bench for an additional $5 million in limited relief.
Dadonov, 33, had a tumultuous first season with the Golden Knights. At the trade deadline in March, Vegas traded Dadonov to the Anaheim Ducks, but the NHL later cancel the agreement. The federation skipped the sale due to a no-move clause in Dadonov’s contract, which included Ducks on his ban list.
Dadonov stayed with the Golden Knights, where he finished the season. In 78 games, Dadonov posted 20 goals and 23 assists.
Canadianiens will be Dadonov’s fourth NHL team; he has played for the Florida Panthers, Ottawa Senators and the Golden Knights. Dadonov has 124 goals and 142 assists 413 games more than eight seasons in the NHL.
Dadonov is in last year of a three-year, $15 million contract. He will earn $6.5 million in 2022-23.
