Gunman in deadly St Louis high school shooting had 600 rounds of ammunition | US News

A gunman who killed a student and a teacher at a Missouri high school was armed with an AR-15-style rifle and more than 600 rounds of ammunition.

Orlando Harris, 19, had magazines strapped to his chest, some in his bag, and other ammunition that police found dumped in the stairs around Central High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in St Louis.

Alexandria Bell, 15, a student, and Jean Kuczka, 61, a PE teacher, died and seven other students were injured in Monday’s shooting.

Harris, who graduated from the school last year, was eventually killed in a shootout with police.

He left a handwritten note explaining why he carried out the attack.

In the message, he complains that he has no friends, no family, no girlfriend, and lives an isolated life that he calls “the perfect storm for a mass shooter.” .

The attack forced students to barricade doors, gather in classroom corners, jump from windows and run out of the building in search of safety.

Several people in the school said they heard Harris scream: “You’re all dying!”

Police commissioner Michael Sack urged people to come forward when someone who appeared to be mentally ill or distressed began “talking about buying a gun or causing harm to others”.

Andre Bell, the father of the deceased student, described his daughter as his “everything”.

“She was fun, wonderful, and a great person,” he said.

“She’s a girl I’d love to meet and love to hear from.

“No matter how I feel, I can always talk to her and everything is fine. It’s my baby.”

‘This could be much worse’

Abbey Kuczka said her mother Jean was killed when the gunman burst into her classroom and she moved between him and her students.

Ms. Kuczka said: “My mother was very fond of children. “She loves her students. I know her students look at her like she’s their mother.”

The seven injured students are 15 or 16 years old and are said to be in stable condition.

Police said four people suffered gunshot or graze injuries, two suffered bruises and one broke an ankle – apparently from jumping out of a three-story building.

Mr. Sack said Harris was equipped with nearly a dozen 30-piece high-capacity magazines.

“This could be much worse,” he said.

According to Education Week, the school shooting is the 40th this year to result in injury or death – the most in any year since the organization began tracking shootings in 2018.

Deadly attacks include shooting at Robb elementary school in UvaldeTexas, in May, when 19 children and two teachers died.
