While back to the champion Corniche (Quality Sugar) fades to the end, Gunite (c, 3, Gunman–Simple Surprise, by Cowboy Cal) completed a great weekend in Saratoga for the Winchell Thoroughbreds and coach Steve Asmussen with a crunch victory in the GII Amsterdam S. in upstate New York Sunday. Disqualified 7-1, Gunite fights Pinehurst (Spinning candy) through fractions: 21.78 and: 44.60, while Corniche sits in a lurking position behind the duel leaders. When the champion fell back in the first leg, Gunite strode into the lane before bravely holding out Exactly (Realistic jokes) to win by neck while completing 6 1/2 stretches in 1:15.75.
Winchell Thoroughbreds was in Saratoga winner’s circle on Saturday with GII winner Jim Dandy S. Epicenter (Not this time), while Asmussen made the trip with both Epicenter and GI Alfred G. Vanderbilt H. Jackie’s Warrior winner (Music by Maclean).
