Guardians Of The Galaxy Director James Gunn Directs DCU’s ‘Superman: Legacy’

Earlier this year, James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, Maker of Peace) and Peter Safran (aquatic producer), both of whom are co-CEOs of DC Studios, revealed the lineup for the first chapter of the DC cinematic universe. Dubbed “Gods and Monsters,” the first chapter of DCU is set to showcase at least 10 film and television projects. One of those projects is a new Superman movie called “Superman: Legacy.”

At the time of the movie’s announcement, it was rumored that Gunn would direct the film but that has not been confirmed. However, Safran said he personally hopes Gunn will direct the film. Yesterday, Gunn confirmed on Twitter that he will, in fact, direct “Superman: Legacy” with a heartfelt post.

“Yes, I’m directing Superman: Legacy which will be released on July 11, 2025,” Gunn wrote in a tweet. “My brother Matt told me when he saw the release date he started crying. I asked him why. He said, ‘Dude, it’s dad’s birthday today.’ I didn’t realize it. I lost my dad almost three years ago. He was my best friend. He didn’t understand me as a child, but he supported my love of comics and love of movies. and I wouldn’t do this movie now without him.

It has been a long road up to this point. I was offered Superman years ago – I turned it down at first because I had no way of feeling the unique, fun and emotional giving Superman the dignity he deserves. Then, less than a year ago, I saw a path, in many ways, around Superman’s legacy – both the way his aristocratic Kryptonian parents and his Kansas farmer parents indicated. Who he is and the choices he makes.

“So I ended up choosing to take on the script. But I was hesitant to direct, despite Peter Safran and others repeatedly urging me to commit (sorry, Peter). Just because Just because I write something doesn’t mean I feel it in my mind, bone, visually and emotionally, enough to spend over two years directing it, especially not something of this magnitude.

But long term and short term, I love this scenario and I’m super excited as we begin this journey. #UpUpandAway”

“Superman: Legacy” is scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025, and according to Safran, it’s “the beginning of the DCU.” The co-CEO also revealed that while this is the official start of the DCU, “Superman: Legacy” will not be an origin story. Safran said the film will instead focus on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing, before addressing the decades-old theme of heroism: He’s the embodiment of truth, justice, and American style. He’s kindness in a world that thinks kindness is old-fashioned.”

At the time of the announcement of “Superman: Legacy”, it was revealed that a separate Superman movie produced by JJ Abrams and written by Te-Nehisi Coates was still in development, but it would exist outside of the box. DCU, just like how Matt Reeves’ series The Batman starring Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader will be too.
