Grandmother stands trial for stabbing 7-year-old granddaughter


A Bronx grandmother accused of stabbing her 7-year-old niece in February has now been deemed fit to stand trial. Based on New York Post OfficeMaritza Yauger, 65, is facing “attempted murder and assault.”

According to the source, Yauger was directed to undergo a psychiatric examination after being arrested for stabbing his 7-year-old niece.

On Monday, prosecutors determined that the 65-year-old was “well enough to stand trial.” However, Yauger’s attorneys are said to plan to pursue a “psychological defense”.

Yauger’s arrest is said to have “shocked” friends and neighbors because the grandmother was often very fond of her niece.

Maria Castillo, a hairdresser at a local salon, said she was surprised by the incident.

“She adores her niece. When she brought her niece, I said, ‘Why are you giving her everything?’ She said, ‘I have two sons. I don’t have a daughter. I love my niece. I give her everything.’”

Details of the stabbing and the condition of the 7-year-old boy

Based on New York Post OfficeYauger is said to have stabbed his 7-year-old niece around 8am on February 21. The child was stabbed in the neck, abdomen and back by a foreign object.

Additionally, police reported that Yauger had left his niece “in a pool of blood”.

The 7-year-old boy was transported to Lincoln Hospital in critical condition. Based on PIX11, she also suffered a skull fracture and a brain bleed. Furthermore, the child was placed in a medically induced coma.

District Attorney Darcel Clark shared more details about the stabbing.

“This brave young woman is fighting for her life after her grandmother allegedly assaulted her while she was sleeping with her 4-year-old sister. We are hoping for a speedy recovery and will do everything we can to ensure these girls get the support they need to deal with their trauma.”
