The Manhattan District Attorney is presenting evidence to a grand jury that former President Donald Trump may have committed a crime related to hush money made to an adult film actress in 2016, according to a people familiar with the investigation.
The move lays the groundwork for possible criminal charges against Trump.
The investigation stems from a series of payments Trump made after the 2016 presidential election, allegedly to cover up an extramarital affair with Stormy Daniels. Trump’s former personal attorney, Michael Cohen, pleaded guilty in federal court in 2018 to making payments “at the direction” of Trump. Although Cohen has served time in prison, Trump has never been charged and neither federal nor local prosecutors have pursued the case.
Now, however, after securing Trump’s company conviction for fraud, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office has summoned witnesses to testify before a new grand jury, according to the source.
Trump, who has said he did nothing wrong, could face falsifying business records, the lowest-level felony in New York.
