Patna:

The two top leaders of the Grand Coalition in Bihar – Minister Nitish Kumar and Lalu Yadav of Rashtriya Janata Dal – will meet the Chief of Parliament Sonia Gandhi in Delhi on Sunday evening, sources said. This will be their first meeting in more than six years. Sources said the two Bihar leaders also hoped that Rahul Gandhi would be present at the meeting. But Mr. Gandhi is in Kerala, leading the Kanyakumari of Parliament to Kashmir Bharat Jodo Yatra.

Nitish Kumar and Sonia Gandhi last met at an Iftaar before the Bihar elections in 2015.

The Chief Minister of Bihar met Rahul Gandhi during his last visit to Delhi earlier this month. Mrs. Gandhi was abroad at the time for medical treatment.

As for Mr Yadav, he was jailed in 2018 for several fodder scams followed by pandemic-induced isolation. In the coming weeks, the ailing leader on bail will travel to Singapore for a kidney transplant.

While sources indicate that this will be a courtesy visit, it is also possible that some serious subjects will be crossed, including taking the Grand Alliance to the national level.

That possibility is being explored by leaders in Bihar, especially as Mr Kumar is working to bring the opposition into a cohesive front against the BJP ahead of the 2024 national elections.

The meeting also took place as the National Assembly was preparing to elect its next president. The nomination process for the election begins on Thursday.

The contest, originally scheduled to take place between Shashi Tharoor and Rajasthan Chief Ashok Gehlot, could be cornered, with several leaders including Manish Tewari and Digvijaya Singh expressing interest.

During his most recent visit to Delhi, Mr. Kumar met most of the key opposition leaders. The list includes Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Parliament Speaker Sharad Pawar, Samajwadi Party Leader Akhilesh Yadav and Leftist leaders.
